Taitoko Kindergarten Acknowledged
Taitoko Kindergarten and the amazing environment it provides for families is showcased in a blogpost by Jeanette Clarkin- Phillips from Waikato University.
Jeanette spent time at Taitoko as part of a research project and this motivated her to look further at the benefits for families and communities from early childhood services.
“I decided that I wanted my PhD to focus on how and why the kindergarten was supporting families, and what impact this was having on the community – a community labelled ‘vulnerable’ by government bureaucrats and national statistics”.
Jeanette recommends that ECE services become community hubs and be within walking distance for parents.
She says disadvantaged communities need support to find solutions and resources from within, rather than have imposed solutions from outside so called experts.
And she says teachers need ongoing professional development to support a strengths-based empowerment approach to families.
