Anofale o le Faiaoga – Intentional Teacher Fono in Samoa
Monday 10 July – Friday 14 July 2017

The planning and organisation of the fono in Samoa has been progressing very well.  We have a delegation of 10 people going from Fanau Pasifika, Nuanua, Toru Fetu, Tairangi Kindergartens and from our office.

The Samoan National Council of Early Childhood Education run their own teacher training to attain an ECE certificate qualification.  Professional development is limited due to lack of funding and expertise in delivering relevant workshops in this sector.

The ECE sector is an unpaid workforce who are funded by churches and local fundraising.  The National Council of Early Childhood Education provide their ECE services with an annual plan of themes for teacher planning and professional discussions.  The Council and colleagues at the Ministry of Education, Sport and Culture (MESC) and the University of South Pacific are working on developing their own early childhood education curriculum.

The first two days of the week will be taking part in the Ava Faafeiloaiga (Ava Welcome Ceremony the National Council of ECE, visiting Aoga Amata, Teacher’s Training College, MESC and the National University of Samoa.

On the first day of the fono we have invited key politicians to officially open and give a keynote speech.  There is an opportunity for He Whanau Manaaki Kindergartens to respond on the importance of ECE and how this sector can be valued. The next two days will be keynote presentations and workshops with many opportunities for talanoa.  Louana Fruean is doing a keynote presentation on Te Whariki and Andy Cairns will present on Leadership.  The types of workshops that have been offered are: working with under 2s, interactions, music and movement, dispositions, environment, positive guidance and language, culture and identity.

This is the first time that an external group has offered to give the ECE sector in Samoa a conference that is relevant and provide lots of ideas and information to support them in their teaching practice and provision of quality early childhood education.
