About us and our programme

Our vision at Carterton Kindergarten is to be a place for tamariki and whānau to feel connected within an environment that nurtures life-long learning.

We encourage curiosity, creativity, exploration and discovery through curriculum focused on art, sustainability, wood working, physical skills and process cooking. We hold the Healthy Heart award, Pā-Harakeke and are part of Enviroschools, creating a sustainability lens in our curriculum. This includes experiences, such as paper brick making, providing easiyo yoghurt for lunches, worm farming and gardening.

Our commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi is acknowledged with our daily Wā Kotahitanga mat time where we embrace te ao Māori, te reo me tikanga.  We support tamariki and whānau with a positive transition into kindergarten, within kindergarten and to school processes.

Our localised curriculum reflects our participation and engagement with our wider community and a philosophy inclusive of the values and aspirations of kaiako, tamariki and whānau.

Our philosophy includes the following values:

  • Whanaungatanga - Respectful, nurturing, authentic and trusting relationships
  • Manaakitanga - A sense of well-being and belonging fostered through safe, kind, caring and positive interactions
  • Manawa reka - Tamariki are curious and wonder about the world around them and have a can-do attitude
  • Whānau Tangata - Connections with whānau and community that strengthen mana, identity and culture
  • Te Taiao: To be kaitiaki, having respect for our environment, ourselves and others
  • Auahatanga - For tamariki to be creative, expressive, explore and discover ideas.
