Moving Away from 0.3 and 0.4 Part time Teaching Positions

Over the past 18 months, we have been working with the staffing models that arose from our Keeping Kindergartens Strong (KKS) change process. Two of the staffing models had either fulltime teachers and a 0.4 part time teacher, or fulltime teachers and a 0.3 part time teacher.

Although teams and the people filling those positions have done a great job in providing high quality learning programmes for children, we have found other challenges in working with such small positions – these include being able to secure relievers, Education Council interpretations of how part timers can move to full certification, management of time for team meetings etc.

As a result, we will be moving away from the model of a 0.4 (or 0.3) position and moving to either 0.8/0.6, 0.8/0.5, 0.9/0.5, 0.75/0.75, or 0.65/0.65 positions (to make up 1.4 or 1.3 staffing dependent on the kindergarten). This means that if there is a vacancy in a team for a fulltime teacher, we would talk with that team about moving that vacant fulltime position to a part time position (0.9, 0.8, 0.75, 0.6, or 0.5) and increasing the existing 0.3 or 0.4 part time position.

This does not mean that we will be coming out to all teams with 0.3 and 0.4 positions and making them change. Rather, if a vacancy comes up at that kindergarten, we will be talking to those involved at that time.

Whenever a vacancy comes up in a kindergarten, we look at how the model for that kindergarten is working, so what is being stated here, isn’t much different; it’s just that we are looking to move away from those smaller part time positions over time, and so we wanted to be transparent with you about that.

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to talk to your Senior Teacher, or to Karen Skett.
