Welcome to our latest update of information and stories you may be interested in...

We hope that you all have a great Easter break, and get to some of the things you enjoy over the break!

Just to let you know that I (Jane) am currently working part time in the Northern Auckland Kindergarten Association Office (North Shore), as the Acting General Manager.  I will be in Auckland 2-3 days each week and in WMK Office rest of the time.   My contact details remain the same, just my location varies ☺.  This arrangement is temporary and is part of the support that WMK is able to provide to other New Zealand Kindergarten Associations.

Remember that you can access the Kōrero at any time by going to www.wmkindergartens.org.nz/korero and you can access any previous editions by going to www.wmkindergartens.org.nz/archive

What events have you got planned?

Hi everyone,

I know many of you have exciting and interesting things going on at the moment and we want to know about it!

So if you have anything happening at Kindergarten e.g. events, fundraisers or anything you think especially intriguing please let me know!

Such events can be great opportunities not only for publicity and promotion but also to invite the wider community into our kindergartens, creating an awesome space for our rangatahi.

You can call or email me :

Playground Audits

In the next month we will be beginning the next round of playground audits. Leanne Nelson, Jim Batty & Trish Thomsen will be undertaking these audits on behalf of the association.

You will be contacted by the person doing your audit prior to them visiting your kindergarten. Can you please ensure that when they do visit, all equipment that you would usually have in your outdoor environment is set up so they can get a good sense of what the outdoor environment usually consists of.

If you have any questions, please contact Lorraine.Coulston@wmkindergartens.org.nz

New Fixed Term Itinerant Relievers

As was discussed at the Regional Staff Meetings and the Reliever Meetings this term, we are appointing 10 new part-time Itinerant Relievers, on a fixed-term for Terms 2 and 3.  This is to alleviate some of the pressure on our relievers list that these winter terms can bring.  The positions will be spread across our region.

The ads for these positions will be on our website tonight and will be in the online Gazette from Tuesday.  Applications close midday Friday 13 April.  Please email vacancies@wmkindergartens.org.nz for information and an application pack.

The Malofie Exhibition

This week marked the beginning of the Malofie Exhibition. This is a traditional Samoan Tattooing Exhibition is supported by Whanau Manaaki given that 14 of our 86 services are located in the wider Porirua area and most of them have high numbers of Maori and Pasifika children and families enrolled. It was also our Communities and Participation Managers Caroline and Danny who organised the event.

The event is taking place in Whitireia's Wikitoria building and ends April 6th. There are 9 women and 4 men taking part in the Malofie.  Two of the participants are current students of Whitireia NZ.

This exhibition will showcase the esteemed work of the famous Suluape family of Samoa.  The Suluape family carry the title of Su’a and are the most respected of all tufuga ta tatau for their work and long-term commitment to developing the malofie and promoting this ancient Samoan craft.

The art of malofie or tatau is the Samoan indigenous practice of piercing the skin with the au (a sharpened implement such as a shark tooth) after being dipped in the black soot ink called lama. A wooden mallet is used to tap the au into the skin.

Having a tatau is a sign that he/she is ready to serve (tautua) the family, village and community.  Those with a tatau are often the first people called to carry out certain cultural tasks such as public announcement of cultural gifts (folafola sua), to serve the ava of the matai (aumaga).  Soga’imiti are expected to be well versed in Samoan customs and protocols.

The exhibition is open to the public with gold coin entry. If you would like to make a group booking or find out more please contact Caroline Mareko - caroline.mareko@wmkindergartens.org.nz - 021 446 843

Hot Tip

Ever get sick of greasy marks on your tablet or cell phone?  Never have a screen cloth on hand?  Got an eraser close by?  Erasers are a great way to clean those screens from greasy fingerprints.
