Important PLD Information Enrolments to attend PLD sessions are rolling in, thank you!! This is just a friendly reminder that if you have enrolled onto a PLD session and something comes up where you are no longer able to attend would you please let either Hannah To’omaga hannah.toomaga@wmkindergartens.org.nz or Karen Craig karen.craig@wmkindergarten.org.nz know, that would be great. This really helps us with planning around venues/handouts and kai.
Finance Update Term 3 2019 Whānau Contributions Your families may be starting to ask about Term 3 requests for Whānau Contributions. Feel free to let them know that these will be emailed out later next week. Hard copies will also be delivered to kindergartens for distribution through “child pockets”. So that we have the most up to date information for our request letters can you please try and have all your children’s enrolment records in Infocare up to date by the end of day on Monday 29 July 2019. End of Month Infocare Cut-Off A reminder that next week is financial month end and we will be working on Board and Kindergarten reports for the month of July. Your Infocare records for July need to be completed on Friday 2 August next week. This means we would like you to complete the following tasks in Infocare, up to and including Friday 2 August, as appropriate: - Sign in sheets marked in Infocare (actual attendance)
- Fee invoices created and committed
- Staff timetables (“staff hour count”) completed
- Online sign off of your monthly roll return
- Any ratio, attendance or roll issues are communicated to the Wellington Association Office (please call Tania or Cathryn 04 232 3069 or 0800 546 337)
Tania or Cathryn will follow up with you next Monday if they have any questions related to your records.
Head Teacher Professional/ReleaseTime This Term All Head Teachers are entitled to 8 hours release time per term (or quarter) under the provisions in the Collective Agreement. When you apply for this through iPayroll please choose “Head Teacher Professional Time” as the leave type. In term 3 (between now and October) all Head Teachers are being given an additional release day for the work associated with Appraisal this term. When you apply for this through iPayroll please choose “Meeting Outside Kindergarten” as the leave type and put “Appraisal Work” in the Reason box. Hazards Just a reminder that the Termly Hazard Checklist is completed during week 9 of each term which last term was the week of 24/6/2019. The Hazard checklist is able to be completed on GOSH and can be found in the “What would you like to report” section on the home page (please see the blue arrow below) Any hazards that are identified during this process that cannot be eliminated immediately are then entered onto your kindergartens Hazard Register using GOSH.  Also week 9 of each term, which was the week of the 24/6/2019, is the time to review your kindergarten Hazard Registers. This is an opportunity to update your Hazard Register, including deciding if the hazard still exists within the kindergarten environment, if there are any changes to the actions and approaches you are taking related to each hazard and ensure that hazards that do exist in your environment are included on the Hazard Register. As seen below, indicated by the arrow, you will see that on the bottom right hand corner of each hazard on your register (using the edit option), there is a place to add the date the hazard was reviewed and by who. All reviews will show up on the Hazard Register. 
Branded Clothing You may have had the opportunity to look at the branded clothing at conference. You may have also noticed that the jacket we had previously is no longer available. We have a replacement jacket as well as some additional items to our collection. You can contact Jan at any time to query these clothing items. Please note all items will have our branding embroided on them.

Whanganui Kindergartens We continue our series of introducing the former Whanganui Association kindergartens that have joined Whānau Manaaki. This week, Central Kindergarten and Harriette Vine Kindergarten. Central Kindergarten, as its name implies, is centrally located in Whanganui. The kindergarten is focused on being family friendly, and parents and grandparents often spend time at the kindergarten when they bring their children in the morning. Head teacher Lorraine Russell says the small kindergarten, which is licensed for 30 children, has welcomed several generations of the same families. She says the kindergarten has kept old photos and people enjoy looking for their relatives. The kindergarten makes the most of their environment. They have been working to keep it attractive and have developed its gardens and the various small spaces for children to work and play, as well as spaces for family to spend time. Central Kindergarten uses its city location for learning in the community, and children have the chance to get out and about, for example, a recent focus has been on picking up litter. A strong sense of place is also important to the teaching team as children learn about the Whanganui River and its importance.
Harriette Vine Kindergarten Harriette Vine donated the land for the kindergarten that bears her name in Whanganui. She also planted a large pohutukawa tree that is in the centre of the kindergarten grounds, and which is now protected. The kindergarten, located near the hospital and the racecourse in Whanganui, recently celebrated 50 years of service to children and families in the community. Harriette was one of the first woman lawyers in New Zealand and, when she died aged 84, left the land to the Whanganui City council for the benefit of children. Head teacher Kylie says there’s a strong focus on nature, with children enjoying looking for bugs and playing around the pohutukawa tree. The kindergarten has a beautiful outdoor space. There’s strong family support, a dedicated committee and established relationships with local schools.
Kindergarten Teachers Settlement - Union Members Today is the last day for union members to vote on the Kindergarten Teachers’ Collective Agreement proposed settlement. If you are a union member you can vote up until 5pm this afternoon. If you belong to NZEI Te Riu Roa you should have received an email with more information. These emails were sent out last week, check your email folder and if not there check your spam mail. We will explain what happens once the vote is completed in a future edition of the Kōrero.
Gifted Learner Awards  As part of the package of support for gifted education, submissions for awards for gifted learners are now open for the October round. The twice-yearly awards are open for gifted learners in three categories – early learning awards, primary awards and secondary awards. The awards include early learners or groups of learners who identify as gifted or have exceptional abilities. They are designed to support children to take part in something they’re really interested in – challenging and extending them and supporting their overall wellbeing. We are excited that the awards have been offered to children who are not yet attending school. There may be children who would like to explore their passion with an expert or other like-minded children, develop an artefact, access resources, or do an experiment. Children may want to visit a special place of interest for instance with a culture, craft, outdoor or language focus. The possibilities are open and we hope as many children as possible take up this opportunity. Submissions for the October 2019 awards opened on 26 July and close on 30 August. Johnsonville On The Move 
Dawn Blessing A dawn blessing was held in Johnsonville this week to formally bless the new space for Waitohi Kindergarten, which will replace Johnsonville All Day Kindergarten. The new kindergarten is in the new library building, and the kindergarten’s first day will be on 5 August. Head teacher Anne Masterton says the blessing, by Kura Moeahu, was beautiful and representatives from the building company, the council and He Whānau Manaaki then entered the space to share their “good energy” with the building. Kura also gifted the kindergarten a song, “Haere Mai ki te Whare Waitohi”. Wellington's Mayor, Justin Lester, spoke at the opening and talked of the good will from all parties to make sure the development went ahead. Anne also spoke on behalf of the kindergarten. She thanked everyone for the role they had played and said it would be a building of “learning, fun and love’. Since the blessing new furniture has been unveiled and the children have seen it and are very excited. Anne says the children extracted a promise from the teachers that when the building housing the old kindergarten is demolished, the toys will be spared.

World Friendship Day  World Friendship Day, also known as International Day of Friendship takes place on 30 July. International Friendship Day is a celebration to mark friendships from all over the globe. Its purpose is a day to reflect on the friendships that are important to us as individuals, whether they be with an old school friend, a sibling, a colleague or even a pet.
Local Elections Coming Up Local government elections are being held this year, and this is the chance for staff and families of Whānau Manaaki Kindergartens to have a say on things that affect your local communities. This includes things like parks and playgrounds, library services, community events, school holiday activities, swimming pool charges and cultural celebrations. Make sure you and your families have your say. The first thing is to be on the electoral roll. Get on the roll by 16 August because postal elections are being held in September. Here’s a link to enrol. You can also download forms for your parents from this site.

The tamariki at Aramoho Kindergarten are enjoying being back and engaged in their learning after the holiday break. 
At Miramar Central they are strengthening their practices around being kaitiaki - guardians of our environment. They are thinking about and exploring ways to REDUCE, REUSE and RECYCLE. This photo is of their recent op-shop finds; one example of how they are reusing things at kindergarten. At Titahi Bay Kindergarten tamariki had lots of fun at the first Wa Whariki for the term with Whaea Miri.
