Nau mai ki tenei wiki Kōrero.

What an amazing term this has been!

Welcome to the teachers and staff of the kindergartens in Whanganui, and the Central Plateau – the Whanganui Kindergarten Association officially joined He Whānau Manaaki on 1 July this week, and this is the first Kōrero that includes them as well.

You’ll see below that there is an item named For Whanganui Staff.  This section is just for the staff and teachers of Whanganui and Central Plateau, because it contains information unique to them about details around their transition to He Whānau Manaaki. Others of you are welcome to read it, but don’t get confused thinking it’s meant for you lol!

This term has also been amazing because of the fantastic work teams have done in engaging their whānau and communities – particularly in relation to Matariki celebrations. The celebrations that are visible through Facebook and Story Park, and the ones we have been able to attend reflect the strong support amongst communities for kindergartens and the strong support kindergarten teams give to communities – babies, toddlers, and young children will just thrive and learn beautifully with such relationships flourishing.

So thank you, and thanks to our office staff, transport team, and navigators who do a superb job in supporting teams to do best by children.

Our Staff Conference is fast approaching, and we look forward to catching up and sharing two days of amazing presenters, and having lots of fun.

Enjoy the last days for this term, have a restful weekend, and see you on Monday – we rock!

                        Xoxo

Thanks From Whanganui!

It was a great day on Monday for the Whanganui Kindergartens as they officially became part of Whānau Manaaki Kindergartens.

The teams were thankful for the wonderful welcome gift baskets that were delivered around the Kindergartens Monday morning.

Looking forward to meeting the teams at conference.

Update No 9

5 Days to go before conference!

We are excited to welcome you to the ninth and final Conference update!

We look forward to welcoming you to this year’s annual Staff Conference on 8 and 9 July.

The theme of this year’s Conference is – Mana Atua

Registration: Please note that registration for conference is now closed

Questions for presenters

A number of our presenters will be allowing time at the end of their presentations for questions. It would be awesome if you could think of questions that you want to ask so we can be prepared.

Waiata

This year we will be singing waiata at the completion of every workshop, keynote and key presentation. All waiata are included in your conference programme, which you will receive at registration, and the words to the waiata will also be on the screen in each room.

Accommodation

Due to numbers of people requiring accommodation we have had to place people in different hotels across the city. We have done our best to place people with their teams. Thank you for your patience.

Non-teaching staff

The Staff Conference begins at 8.30am for non-teaching staff on Monday morning 8th July. A Conference Keynote speaker and a variety of workshops will take place for Homebased TONI Educators, Community Navigators, Transport Teams, Teacher Aides and Administrators. All non-teaching staff are warmly invited to attend and then to stay on for the whole staff meeting in the afternoon. If you live north of Waikanae or in the Wairarapa, you will also be able to access hotel accommodation on the Sunday night – see below for further details.

Whole Staff Meeting

The compulsory Whole Staff Meeting will be held on Monday, 8 July, starting at 12.45pm at Te Papa in Wellington.  All teachers, kindergarten based students and office staff are required to attend and all other staff strongly encouraged to attend. We are very excited to announce that the Key Note speaker this year is Gilbert Enoka who has, for the past 16 years, been the Mental Skills Coach for the All Blacks and will be sharing his own personal story as well as the transferrable strategies he uses in his work.

Teachers Conference

The Teachers Conference will take place on Tuesday, 9 July, at Te Papa in Wellington, beginning with a prompt start of 8.00am.

Car parking

Te Papa offers a special function attendees rate of $12.00 from 6.00am to 6.00pm and an evening special of $8.00 from 5.00pm to 2.00am the next day. There is a car parking validator machine available at the registration desk in the Angus room, bring your ticket in and pass it through the machine, then you will need to go to a pay station on departure and the special function attendees rate will apply.

Water bottles

Due to our ongoing commitment to sustainability we will not be providing bottled water in the Conference bags. Water stations and paper cups will be available throughout the venue; therefore we encourage you to bring your own water bottles.

Conference lunch

Lunch will be provided by the Association using the Te Papa caterers and will be served in the Oceania room. In response to feedback from 2018 Conference, lunch will now be served over two sittings, this allows everyone to have room to enjoy lunch more comfortably. Your Conference tag will identify which sitting you are in.

Therefore, it is important that you only attend the lunch sitting you have been allocated; for example Kākāriki group will have lunch at 11.30am and the Kahurangi group will have lunch at 12.40pm.

Thankers

Thank you to you all who have agreed to thank our presenters. When you arrive at your workshop/presentation please ensure that you make yourself known to the staff who are minding each room so they can give you the gift for the presenter.

Mid winter celebration

We are aware that it can be difficult for staff who live outside of the Wellington area to attend our end of year celebration.

Therefore, this year we are inviting all staff to our celebration at Macs Bar on Monday 8 July, after the Staff Meeting at 5.00pm to 9.00pm.

This is a wonderful opportunity to mix and mingle with each other. We will be providing kai and subsidised drinks, and there will be music along with a photo booth, and flower wall so you can take photos to remember the celebration!

Please see the Kaupapa for Day 1 July 8, and Day 2 July 9 below: (please note there are some room changes on Day 2)

Looking forward to seeing you all on Monday 8 July and Tuesday 9 July!

Social Competency : Responsive to Trauma

Young children’s cognitive development occurs mainly in the context of social relationships –who learn from participating with peers and more skilled members of society. Not being able to initiate and maintain relationships is a source of anguish and loneliness, even for very young children.

Monday Marked Whanganui Officially Joining WM!

In continuing our introduction of Whanganui Kindergartens, we’d like to show you Te Puna Ako Ki Totara Puku!

Te Puna ako ki totara puku is a relatively new service having opened in March 2018. The kindergarten came about as Wanganui East School had spare space and they had noticed a drop in the number of new entrants engaging with ECE.

Following this the Whanganui Association arranged the development of a new kindergarten in the school grounds - Te Puna Ako Ki Totara Puku, who now offer an all day, full year service for children aged 0-6yrs, with a playgroup next door.

The space was also used by Putiki kindergarten in 2015 when they had a huge flood and were evacuated from their building for six months.

Sustainable practise is a great focus for the kindergarten and the teaching team are sure to make the most of natural resources. “The playground is unlike any other, yes there is the sandbox and the swing set, but the rest of the play area has been created using natural resources”, says Raewyn (Senior Teacher).

Te Puna Ako Ki Totara Puku is currently fundraising to further develop their playground using natural resources and recycling where possible.

Waharoa Blessing

Northland Kindergarten celebrated a milestone in their journey to recognise their tūrangawaewae in their programme and environs with the opening and blessing of their waharoa and entranceway.

They were grateful to have so many of the community join them, whānau and ngā tamariki( past and present).

Glenda from the Senior Teacher team, Councillors  Dianne Calvert and Andy Foster, MP’s Nicola Willis and Grant Robertson and whānau from St Anne’s Church.

It was great they could share their journey, which has been ongoing for a few years now, and the underlying philosophies that drove it.

Matariki Celebrations

This Week On Facebook

Titahi Bay kindergarten children and teachers recently visited the Nairnville Recreation Centre.  Wow, it looks like they had an amazing time.

When Pikopiko Clyde Quay were invited by Clyde Quay School, to join them in dressing up as a favourite character from a book, Kathryn knew exactly who she would be.... doesn’t she make a marvellous Mrs Wishy Washy?!

Over the last term Matiu has taught Paremata all about Powhiri. They have practised calling the manuhiri (our guests) with a karanga, our chiefs have welcomed our guests with whaikorero and we have sung beautiful waiata.

The tamariki were able to use their new knowledge to welcome Rumo Miromiro from Paremata School with a powhiri.

They were all especially excited to see some of their old kindergarten friends, to share kai and to have a whole lot of fun together.

Thank you to all the tamariki from Paremata Kindergarten and Paremata School, you made your teachers- kaiako very proud.

This week the teachers at Tairangi took some time to meet with Ahi, one of their kindergarten parent’s, who works at Pataka, to discuss and develop an understanding of a Waharoa. We are currently gathering information and concepts for a new Tairangi Waharoa

Te Reo Maori in the classroom -

Ko Michele ahau!
I am on a MISSION to have te reo Māori spoken in every classroom in Aotearoa.
I am lucky enough to work alongside some of you - the most passionate inspiring kaiako who are making a difference to tamariki, whānau, kura and communities in your te reo journeys and teaching.

This website is a space to connect with you, share resources, and let you know what's going on in te ao Māori outside your akomanga.

Through my Te Reo Māori Classroom PD and workshops in schools I have met many of you and have always wanted a forum to be able to re-connect and get feedback on how your journey is progressing, what is working for you and what the tamariki are enjoying.

I have been able to increase my te reo through my teaching practice Teach-Learn-Teach.

Teaching is certainly the best way of learning. There are plenty of opportunities for repitition.

Involved in my resource making is a little rōpū of talented people coming together to do what we love.

I was privileged to have a secondment to work on resource development for the Treaty Resource Centre.  It was through this work that I realised the absolute need for us as kaiako and Treaty partners to be working Te Tiriti day to day in our akomanga and kura.
