Joyce Barnes Travel Trust

Applications are now open for the Joyce Barns Travel Grants 2017 round.

2017 is the Joyce Barns Travel Trust’s final grant round. New Zealand Kindergartens has contributed towards the remaining Trust funds to provide one $5,000 grant. Registered kindergarten teachers currently employed by a kindergarten association are eligible to apply for the grant, to assist with the cost of travelling overseas to study or to assist meeting costs of attendance at early childhood education conferences.

Teachers wishing to apply should send a letter of application setting out:

• teaching experience and interests, and current teaching position;
• the purpose of applying to the trust (for study or conference attendance);
• a description of the focus of the study or conference;
• the benefits to the teacher and to the association of the course of study or conference attendance;
• an outline of travel plans; and
• a description of how the experience would be disseminated.

The names of two referees should also be included with one being able to attest to the applicant’s professional teaching qualities.

The criteria for short listing applicants:

• a proven record of successful teaching experience;
• the ability of the applicant to benefit from the award;
• the capacity of the applicant to disseminate the knowledge and information gained on return to New Zealand.

Successful applicants would be expected to travel within a year of the award being given and to provide a report on their return.

The letter of application should be sent to NZ Kindergartens, PO Box 3058, Wellington 6140 or emailed to jacinta.blank@nzkindergarten.org.nz  by Friday 25 August 2017.

Background

Joyce Barns was born in 1916 and lived with her aunts in Invercargill from a young age after the death of her mother. Joyce trained to be a kindergarten teacher in Dunedin. She was the director of several kindergartens and of the Helen Deem Centre which was used in training Plunket nurses. Joyce moved to Wellington in 1947 and was the director of the Taranaki Nursery School where kindergarten teachers were trained.

Joyce held the position of principal of the Wellington Kindergarten Teachers College until 1974 when the college amalgamated with the Wellington College of Education.  Joyce is remembered as being warm and caring of ‘her girls’ at the college. She was ‘quite proper’ but had a great sense of fun. Joyce’s influence on early childhood education has been widespread and enduring.

The Travel Trust is administered by Guardian Trust with the Nikau Foundation, an advisory trustee providing grant recommendations. The Nikau Foundation has asked NZ Kindergartens to manage the process for the awarding of the grants including recommending applicants for the receipt of the awards.

The Trust has determined that three qualified kindergarten teachers nominated by NZ Kindergartens, He Whānau Manaaki o Tararua Free Kindergarten Association and Early Childhood Leadership comprise the panel to receive the applications and to make the recommendations.

The panel will meet in September and successful applicants notified and award payments made by the end of the year.
