Back of House Tour of the Māori Collection Rooms at Te Papa

If you are part of the group for this tour please be reminded of the need to adhere to the strict tikanga /cultural protocols as detailed below. Please ensure that you meet this criteria before taking part in the tour:

Te Papa is internationally recognised for the way it works with the source communities of our collections and especially the indigenous Māori people of Aotearoa New Zealand.  Our team have learned how to manage and care for Māori treasures in culturally appropriate ways.  In fact, a full experience of the Māori collections includes understanding and following some of the cultural protocols and customs of the Māori people who are the Kaitiaki (cultural guardians) of these collections.  For your visit we ask that you observe the following:

  • Please be advised that in the Māori culture, members of the public, men and women, for their own well-being, may be restricted from entering the collection stores from time to time especially if they are experiencing physical challenges - for example, anyone who is unwell or frail, women who are pregnant or menstruating, shoud refrain from visiting.
  •  Children under sixteen are not permitted in the stores.
  • All food or drink should be left with your belongings.
  • At all times, stay close to your guide and in an emergency please follow their instructions.
  • Cameras, video and audio recorders are not permitted, unless approval is given by the guide.
  • Water basins are situated outside each of the collection rooms for visitors upon exit of the stores.  These are reserved for cultural cleansing after the tour.

Car Parking

Te Papa offers a special function attendees rate of $10.00 from 6am to 6pm and an evening special of $6.00 from 5pm to 2am the next day. Day hourly parking rate is $4.00 and night hourly is $2.00 from 5pm to 2am the next day.  There is a car parking validator machine available inside the hired venue and your guests need to bring their ticket in and pass it through the machine, then they will need to go to a pay station on departure and the special function attendees rate will apply.

Monday Night Canapés and Drinks

These will be served in Te Marae from 4.45pm.  Please note that for all alcoholic drinks there is a $2.00 charge.  Please ensure you have $2.00 coins to use as there is no eftpos facilities available. Non-alcoholic drinks will be free of charge.
