Back of House Tour - Māori Collection Rooms This year we are very excited to be able to offer the opportunity for staff to choose a Back of House Tour of the Māori Collection Rooms at Te Papa as a workshop option. Numbers will be very limited for this workshop. However, there are strict tikanga /cultural protocols around this tour as detailed below. Please ensure that you meet this criteria before enrolling.
Te Papa is internationally recognised for the way it works with the source communities of our collections and especially the indigenous Māori people of Aotearoa New Zealand. Our team have learned how to manage and care for Māori treasures in culturally appropriate ways. In fact, a full experience of the Māori collections includes understanding and following some of the cultural protocols and customs of the Māori people who are the Kaitiaki (cultural guardians) of these collections. For your visit we ask that you observe the following:
Waiata: As with previous years, waiata will be included in the conference programme but just so everyone can be prepared, we will be including waiata details in the conference updates and where possible a link to the waiata will also be included. The following waiata “Wainui e” will be sung following the key note presentation by Moana Jackson. This waiata was chosen for Moana because of his close connections with Wainuiomata where he was a teacher for 10 years.
