Nau mai ki tenei wiki Kōrero.

It feels strange to not have the buzz of organising our annual Conference which is usually happening at this time of the year!

The last few months have been a bit like this, usual stuff being done in different ways.  We continue to appreciate the ways you have managed the changes and at times uncertainty of the last few months.

The last few weeks have been a time of settling back into our more usual rhythms and again we appreciate the skillful ways you have been managing all these transitions for yourselves, tamariki and their whānau.

Waiho i te toipoto, kaua i te toiroa

Let us keep close together, not far apart.

Weekly Attendance Data Collection Update

The Ministry of Education still require the sign in sheets to be marked with actual attendance by the end of each Friday.

Kindergarten Budgets And Pooling Equity Funding

As you will be aware, kindergarten budgets will be distributed to you over the coming week.

Most of the budget will be filled in, except the following:

  • Any capital programme you’re planning (including whether or not you’re planning to buy laptops etc)
  • If you get Targeted Funding, how you propose to spend that, and
  • If you get Equity Funding, how you propose to use that.

If you need help with this stuff, please contact Jane Braun (jane.braun@wmkindergartens.org.nz) rather than Brendon or another member of the finance team. This is mainly because, with Covid-19, the team is inundated with work at the moment.  It also means that Jane is able to work with you and your Senior Teacher to provide consistency of approach across all of our Equity Funded Kindergartens.

If you are a kindergarten that receives Equity Funding, you will also notice a slight difference, because we are proposing to pool some equity funding, and this will show up as a line that says “proposed pooling” or something like that.

We want to talk further about this with the Head Teachers of kindergartens receiving Equity Funding, and we will be contacting you about this over the coming weeks; but at this stage, we needed to put something in the budgets to indicate our thinking, hence our heads up about it.

Financial Year End

Tuesday 30 June 2020 is our financial year end so we require your assistance to close off our accounting records and ensure they are tidy for our audit review.

Year End Banking

If you have any petty cash on hand at the kindergarten then this needs to be banked prior to year end.  If you could aim to bank all monies into the WMK “02” account before Friday 26 June this will allow our Finance team to contact you with any queries they have before the end of the financial year.  Can you also update Infocare with details of all deposits made.

Year End Audit and Invoice Cut-off

Our auditors will be visiting soon to start their review of our financial records for the financial year.  This means we need to ensure that all invoices for goods and services that relate to this period (1 July 2019 to 30 June 2020) are included in your kindergarten accounts.  Can you please scan and email (accounts@wmkindergartens.org.nz or accounts.wg@wmkindergartens.org.nz) all your recent invoices to us at the Association Office by Friday 3 July 2020 and please give some thought to those June 2020 invoices that you will not have received by this date - in these cases can you please contact your regular suppliers and ask them to send their invoices to you so that you can meet this deadline.

We will include all invoices we receive from you in your June kindergarten accounts, which will be emailed to you in “draft” (subject to review by our auditors) later in July.  Please check your kindergarten mail over the term break and scan/email any late invoices you receive after the Friday 5 July 2020 cut-off date to accounts@wmkindergartens.org.nz or accounts.wg@wmkindergartens.org.nz.

Infocare Cut-Off and Further Instructions

We will issue year-end instructions regarding Infocare in next week’s Kōrero so please keep an eye out.  Next week we will also be circulating information that will provide details about:

  • Kindergarten monthly accounts being issued over July and August;
  • Finalisation of your 30 June 2020 kindergarten accounts; and
  • Kindergarten AGM processes.

First Aid And Child Protection in the July Break

Thank you so much for your patience as we work through rebooking your First Aid and Child Protection courses.  If you were booked on a course in the April and July break and have NOT had an email from Karen, please email her at karen.craig@wmkindergartens.org.nz and she will confirm your place or offer you a new date.

Relievers Update

Term break is upon us and we would like to know whether you are available for relieving in the term break - from Monday 13 July until Friday 17 July 2020 - at our full-day/all year kindergartens.  Please note that all kindergartens including our Full Day/All Year centres are closed during the first week of the term break for professional development.

Could you please let Leigh know by return mail relievers@wmkindergartens.org.nz

whether or not you are available, what days, and what kindergarten/s you are prepared to go to – please cc Nicki Cook or Dhanaye depending on your location (Nicki – All Wellington and Levin.   Dhanaye – Upper Hutt/Wairarapa).  It would be helpful if you could let us know either way asap.

Staff Sync

Also for those of you that are using Staff Sync – please remember to update your calendar and make yourself unavailable or available.

As with all casual relieving, the work is not guaranteed, but it would help our reliever coordinators to know who will be around during the break.

Term Dates

We have been asked by a number of people to resend the term dates for this year.  Please see below.

There are four different calendars showing open/closed dates, and compulsory leave for:

The key finish dates are:

  • Monday 21 December, last day for Part-Year Kindergartens
  • Tuesday 22 December, last day for Full-Year Kindergartens and Etu Ao.

We will be confirming the dates for next year, 2021, and will communicate those as soon as we can (but no later than September, as required by the Teachers Employment Agreement).

If you have any questions about these dates or the calendars, please contact Karen at karen.skett@wmkindergartens.org.nz or on 021 857 826.

Health and Safety Committee 2020

Just a reminder that Whānau Manaaki has a Health and Safety Committee.

We meet once a term so If you have any issues regarding health and safety or would like to know more about what the committee does, please feel free to contact one of the members or email Lorraine.Coulston@wmkindergartens.org.nz

Sue Barrett Retires

Ōtaki Kindergarten’s head teacher Sue Barrett is retiring after 25 years at the kindergarten.  She says she’ll miss the whānau connections and being part of the whole kindergarten family.

Sue who comes from Ōtaki became involved in Playcentre when her children were young and trained as a teacher after that. She has spent most of her career at Ōtaki Kindergarten.

Sue plans to “trust the universe” and see what happens with the open vista after she finishes her teaching career.

Sue has a tent on Kapiti Island and is looking forward to having more time to spend there. She’s also a weaver and has grandchildren in the Wellington region.

Sue’s farewell will be combined with the Kindergarten’s Matariki celebrations on Thursday July 30, and former colleagues are welcome – please RSVP to the kindergarten.

The team in the Whanganui Office had a surprise visit during the week from Zappo!  And he dropped them off these fantastic balloons, one a fairly accurate look a like of Raewyn's dog, Rosie! What a way to brighten up your day!

Hinemoa house –

Hinemoa House was set up by Horowhenua  Kids, Teens and Family Trust and opened in 2006.
Hinemoa House has a focus of partnering with local people  to build healthy families and a strong community particularly in Taitoko, a lower socio-economic and multi-cultural area of Levin, but also throughout the wider Horowhenua.

We endeavour to provide confidence,  pride and meaning in young lives.

While Hinemoa is located in Levin, each region/community will have their own ‘Hinemoa House’, following these groups is useful for getting information that can really help our families, especially during winter. These groups can provide information around insulation and heating and may have linen and/or curtains etc for families in need.
