About Us and Our Programme

Haere mai, welcome to Newtown Kindergarten. We hope you enjoy your time with us and have a wonderful warm learning experience. Our kindergarten which opened in 1944 is just off Adelaide Road near the hospital, the blood bank and Government House.

We have a spacious outdoor play area with opportunity for activities such as gardening, composting, tree-climbing, swinging, and sand and water play. We also have a physical challenge course and an amazing fort.

Inside, the main room is large and light with two smaller rooms for quiet activities such as reading and puzzles, and family and dramatic play. We have lots of spaces for exploring literacy, numeracy, construction, and music and movement. We offer a range of art experiences including painting, collage, and screen printing.

Our early childhood curriculum. Te Whāriki is a bicultural document. We weave aspects of Te Ao Māori and Te Reo Māori (the Māori world view and the Māori language) into our daily programme.

We encourage children to take responsibility for their own learning, to be active and motivated learners and to lay the foundation for lifelong learning. We encourage children to develop skills in social competency, problem solving, co-operation, and habits of mind in areas such as curiosity, perseverance, concentration, empathy, courage and trust.

SESSION TIMES

Monday to Friday:  8:30am - 2:30pm

Our five teachers range from recent graduates to those with many years experience. We are 100 per cent qualified and registered. We have a part-time administrative support person who is also an early childhood student. We have several education support workers who support the teachers. We often have students on placement working in our kindergarten.

Most children start around three years of age and attend for three days, depending on what suits the family, but children can also attend for four days or five days by arrangement.
