About Us and Our Programme

Adventure Kindergarten was opened in 1994. It is situated in the heart of Whitby, close to the shopping centre, lake and local library. There are several parks and reserves close by and it is   adjacent to Adventure School, a full primary, with whom, the kindergarten has a close association.

The kindergarten is purpose built with spacious grounds and interesting spaces that cater for all tamariki. The community is extremely supportive; and we enjoy good positive relationships with our children and their whānau.

The children’s interests and our philosophy are underpinned by the aspiration statement of Te Whāriki for children;

“To grow up as competent and confident learners and communicators, healthy in mind, body, and spirit, secure in their sense of belonging and in the knowledge that they make a valued contribution to society.” (Te Wháriki 1996 pg9 part A introduction)

We are fortunate on Mondays to have Matiu Te Huki who is our kapa haka kaimahi who shares his knowledge and skills related to kapa haka and Te Ao Māori with our tamariki and kaiako. Our children learn waiata, hongi and powhiri skills as well as pakiwaitara/stories and

increase their knowledge and understanding of Te Reo Māori.

Our programme offers children opportunities to enquire and investigate topics of environmental, global, national, and local interest , with time to continue learning and researching their interests over a sustained period of time.

Monday to Friday: 8:30am - 2:30pm

We have a close relationship with Adventure School, where children turning 5years within the current term, attend school on a Friday morning until 11 am, when they return to kindergarten. Children are welcomed at the school to share some experiences e.g. sports day, story time, be audience for junior concerts. Senior students from school come to read to our tamariki.

We take advantage of opportunities for excursions outside the kindergarten wherever possible e.g. walk to the local village, bus trip to Te Papa. Excursions usually follow an interest that is currently being investigated.

Sessions with predominantly younger children are often a first step into the wider community and Teachers endeavor to establish a calm, secure environment, form comfortable relationships, and provide a programme that encourages children to explore and experiment at their own pace and level of development. Becoming independent and responsible lifelong learners is underpinned in our philosophy.
